The Faculty of Sustainability at Leuphana University of Lüneburg is looking for a full-time Research Associate for the project 'Kili-SES' to start in January 2021 for a fixed term of 2 years.

The university offers one PhD position funded by the DFG Research Unit entitled ‘The role of nature for human well-being in the Kilimanjaro Social-Ecological System (Kili-SES)’ in the field of nature valuation. The focus of the PostDoc will be to design and coordinate the fieldwork and data collection on ‘Demand and values of Nature’s Contributions to People in the Kilimanjaro Mountain’.

The invitation to apply is targeted at extraordinarily qualified academics with an interest in the research field of valuation of nature and nature’s contributions to people / ecosystem services. The PostDoc position will run for a maximum of two years. Throughout 2021-2022, the prospective candidate will be expected to have his/her place of residence in Lüneburg (or surroundings) and to undertake the research in the Tanzanian side of the Kilimanjaro Mountain.

As part of a team of eight people (5PIs+2PhDs+1PostDoc), the postdoctoral researcher (m/f/d) will focus on researching the demand and values of nature and ecosystem services provided by different ecosystems of the Kilimanjaro Mountain and elicited by tourists, tourism operators and maagers. The research is embedded into the interdisciplinary DFG research unit “The role of nature for human well-being in the Kilimanjaro Social-Ecological System (Kili-SES)”, funded by the DFG.

The research questions of the PostDoc research will be:

  • Which nature’s contributions to people are demanded and valued by which stakeholder group and why?
  • What intrinsic, instrumental and relational values of NCP are expressed by different stakeholder groups?

In addition, the PostDoc will coordinate the fieldwork of interviews and questionnaires with other projects of the DFG research unit that focus on human wellbeing, governance and intangible benefits of nature.

Tasks of the PostDoc:

  • To design the interviews and questionnaires by which the PostDoc can assess values of nature and nature’s contributions to people in Kilimanjaro
  • To coordinate the social fieldwork of interviews and questionnaires with other research projects
  • To train PhD students on social fieldwork (interviews and questionnaires) and on content and discourse analyses
  • To publish two high level papers on nature’s contributions to people demanded and valued by multiple stakeholders at Kilimanjaro
  • The postdoctoral candidate (m/f/d) will closely collaborate with two doctoral students (m/f/d) and international researchers of the DFG research unit.

PostDoc profile:

  • PhD degree in environmental science, sustainability science, ecological economics, human ecology, political ecology or a relevant discipline
  • Proven understanding of plural valuation, nature’s contributions to people and ecosystem services frameworks
  • Experience in qualitative and quantitative data collection and data analyses
  • Willingness to learn Kiswahili
  • Proven ability to work in an international team and independently under challenging circumstances
  • Advanced English oral and writing skills
