The Swiss National Science Foundation's Doc.CH (HSS) is aimed at promising researchers who wish to write a doctoral thesis on a topic of their own choice in the humanities and social sciences in Switzerland.

Deadline to submit a proposal is 10 September 2020.

Besides the salary of the doctoral student, the grant may include a contribution towards costs directly related to project implementation.

Candidates must fulfill the following requirements:

  • Degree (master or equivalent degree) from a Swiss higher education institution with excellent marks. Holders of a foreign degree may submit an application if they have Swiss nationality.
  • Submission to the SNSF Research Commission up to two years after obtaining the degree (at the time of the submission deadline).
  • As a rule, at least one change of higher education institution between the bachelor and the start of doctoral studies. Researchers who have not made such a change in advance fulfil the mobility requirements as of the moment they plan making a stay abroad of at least one semester during the doctoral studies.
  • Two persons supervising the doctoral thesis: supervisor (place of matriculation for doctorate in Switzerland) and co-supervisor (at another higher education institution, in Switzerland or abroad)

Exceptions with regard to the academic age and/or the necessary mobility are possible in justified cases. Part of the doctoral thesis may be conducted at a host institution abroad if a corresponding request giving reasons is submitted.
