aletsch glacier 2591631 640For the third time, the Swiss Academy of Sciences is organizing a national conference on research within the framework 'Park Research Switzerland.' The aim of the conference is to show which topics are currently being investigated in parks of national importance and UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Switzerland in order to reflect on the practice and to identify research gaps.

The conference is aimed at all researchers and individuals working in parks and UNESCO World Heritage sites, as well as persons from federal and cantonal offices, non-governmental organizations, and environmental and planning offices.

Please note that although the call is in German and French, submissions are also accepted in English. 

mediating mountains mistThe 46th International Conference of the Austrian Association for American Studies has issued a call for panels and individual papers that explore the conference theme of 'Mediating Mountains.' The deadline for submissions is 19 May 2019. 

Taking place 22-24 November 2019 in Innsbruck, Austria, 'Mediating Mountains' sets out to explore mountains as objects and agents of mediation in all artforms and media, including painting, literature, theater, music, film, television, performance and video art, video gaming, photography, and architecture.

cows 203460 640The journal Sustainability, an international peer-reviewed journal published by MDPI, is calling for papers for a Special Issue exploring the topic of agritourism in mountains. The deadline for submissions is 30 March 2019.

Bruno MesserliIt is with sadness that we share news of the death of one of the MRI's earliest supporters, Professor Bruno Messerli, who passed away at the beginning of February. Bruno was an inspiring leader and scientist, and a true giant of mountain research. In addition to the central role he played in the birth of the MRI, Bruno also co-founded the International Center for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD). We extend our deepest condolences to Bruno’s family, and mourn the loss of a dedicated colleague and a good friend.

alrak long horned beetle 2398584 640The Convention on Biological Diversity is in the process of collecting inputs for the development of a post-2020 global biodiversity framework. The mountain research community are encouraged to provide their views by 15 April 2019. 

In 2020 the Convention on Biological Diversity will adopt a post-2020 global biodiversity framework as a stepping stone towards the 2050 Vision of 'Living in harmony with nature.' In its decision 14/34, the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity adopted a comprehensive and participatory process for the preparation of the post-2020 global biodiversity framework – with input now being invited. 

A one-week training course will be organised in the framework of the H2020 EU-funded project Social Innovation in Marginalised Rural Areas at the Mediterranean Agronomic Institute of Zaragoza, 18-22 November 2019, to address the importance of social innovation in less favoured rural areas.

Social innovation has been heralded as a vital part of the European recovery project since the economic crisis in 2008. It is of particular importance to rural areas, especially more disadvantaged rural areas, where multiple problems of depopulation, environmental quality decline, and low levels of economic activity have been recurrent. With the trend of rapid urbanisation, the remoter rural areas will continue to be adversely affected.

chile glacier small The Chilean Society of the Cryosphere invites researchers, professionals, and students both in Chile and abroad to its 2019 Annual Meeting. The deadline for abstracts is 15 March. 

The Chilean Society of the Cryosphere (SOCHICRI – Sociedad Chilena de la Criósfera) Annual Meeting 2019 will take place in the city of La Serena, 9-10 May 2019. Scientists wishing to present their research are invited to submit an abstract to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.. Submissions can be focused on any component of the cryosphere, including field-based and theoretical studies, remote sensing, numerical simulations, legal frameworks, impacts, risks, associated water resources, and others. Abstracts can be sent in Spanish or English.

Entitled Alpine Water – Common Good or Source of Conflicts?, the proceedings of the ForumAlpinum 2018 contain abstracts of all the event's presentations and posters dealing with questions of water use in the Alpine region and exploring foreseeable future water use conflicts, as well as measures to avoid them. Among the editors is MRI Chair Rolf Weingartner, and the publication includes a summary of his keynote speech on 'Analysing Alpine Water-Related Hotspots: Setting the Ground.'
