LOGO WMFJoin the discussion of 'Mountains in a Changing World: Strengthening Partnerships and Pathways Towards a Thriving Mountain Future' in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, 23-26 October 2018.

Mountain communities and ecosystems are transforming under emerging drivers of global change. The pronounced vulnerability of mountain people and ecosystems to the negative effects of global change make building adaptive capacity and resilience an urgent priority. Developing and identifying solutions to enhance mountain livelihoods and well-being in a sustainable manner must be built on inclusive, just, and environmentally friendly foundations to be sustainable in the long term.

The World Mountain Forum (WMF) is uniquely positioned to provide a timely space for policy-makers, scientists, and practitioners to share experiences and best practices, and develop integrated solutions to existing challenges to sustainable development in mountain regions. The WMF 2018 programme includes high-level segments for leaders and dignitaries, plenary and keynote presentations, debate panels, parallel sessions on four core thematic issues (outlined below), and field trips. WMF 2018 aims to build on past achievements and successes, and develop scenarios for a thriving mountain future. The government of Kyrgyzstan is hosting this prestigious event, and looks forward to welcoming participants to Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan.

The full programme of the 4-day event, including side events, is available in a final draft version on the WMF 2018 website.

WMF 2018 themes and format
The WMF 2018 is structured around four core thematic issues:

  • T-1: Climate Change Affecting Water and Energy in Mountain Areas
  • T-2: Poverty, Food Systems, and Agrobiodiversity
  • T-3: Resilience and Transformation in Mountain Communities and Ecosystems
  • T-4: Investing in Mountains - Securing the Future
The four core themes will be addressed around three foci: 1) current trends and dynamics (Day 1); pathways to sustainable transformation (Day 2, morning); and partnerships to sustain and support sustainable mountain development (Day 2, afternoon). Day three of the Forum is reserved for synthesis and compilation of key messages and an outlook that presents prospects for future action.
