MOOC water and climate changeThis massive open online course (MOOC) will explore climate change in mountain regions, its impacts on the quality and quantity of water in mountain regions, and the risks related to changing water resources.

Initiated and funded by the University of Geneva through its Institute for Environmental Sciences, this MOOC approaches issues of climate change and water in mountains from an interdisciplinary perspective.


'Climate Change and Water in Mountains: A Global Concern' recognizes mountains as particularly sensitive physical environments where intense and rapid changes have in the past, and may increasingly in the future, place pressure on their resource base. It offers modules on climate change, the impact of climate change on water resources and water use, recommendations for adaptation and governance, and risk management. It was contributed to by 25 instructors from a total of 14 institutions in five countries - including MRI Principle Investigators and SLC members Jörg Balsiger and Christian Huggel - highlighting the diversity of theoretical and practical viewpoints. 

This MOOC is open to professionals and students who wish to go beyond basic notions of climate change and water management, and anyone looking to reinforce their knowledge in associated areas of climate change in mountain regions, such as adapation and risk management. 

By the end of the course, participants will be able to: 
  • Define the general concept of climate change in mountain regions.
  • Understand the concepts associated with climate change such as adaptation and water governance strategies.
  • Consider the impacts of climate change on water resources in mountain regions.
  • Identify the impacts of climate change on hydropower, agriculture, aquatic ecosystems, and health.
  • Identify risks that can occur in mountain areas and lead to disruptions in water availability and use.
Course duration is 5 weeks, requiring 2-3 hours of study time per week. Progress will be evaluated through multiple-choice quizzes at the end of each course unit. 

This MOOC begins 30 April 2018.
