An MRI-led side event at this year’s Mountain Partnership Global Meeting explores science and research for evidence-informed policy and action on the ground.

11 December is International Mountain Day. This year, it is not only a chance to celebrate these incredible landforms but also to highlight threats to them and to the people who live on and around them. Coinciding with International Mountain Day, the Mountain Partnership Global Meeting runs 11-13 December in Rome, and focuses on the theme ‘Mountains Under Pressure: Climate, Hunger, and Migration.’ It aims to raise awareness of the need to place mountain ecosystems and peoples at the center of international negotiations, policies, and investments.

Six side events will take place during the Global Meeting. These include a session convened and co-chaired by the MRI on ‘Science and research for evidence-informed policy and action on the ground: Experiences and outlook in mountain-specific cases.’ For this event, the MRI have invited academics and practitioners from diverse backgrounds to share their experiences with science and research in addressing key policy and practice-relevant problems in a mountain-specific context.

Covering topics such as water, land degradation, migration, waste, and natural resource management for emissions reduction, each presentation will also reflect on the role of knowledge and information exchange. The session will conclude with a thought-provoking dialogue with the audience present, and a joint deliberation on the contribution of science and research to supporting knowledge and information for policy and practice – also highlighting key gaps that will feed into an agenda for joint work between scientists, practitioners, and society at large.
