chile 1463830 1920The Second Order Draft of the IPCC Special Report on the Ocean and Cryosphere in a Changing Climate (SROCC) has been made available for expert review. For the scientific community, this is the last opportunity to provide comments.

The Special Report on the Ocean and Cryosphere in a Changing Climate (SROCC) is one of three special reports that the IPCC will be releasing over the next two years. Containing a careful assessment of changes in the ocean and cryosphere, SROCC aims to support policymakers in their understanding of the physical and social dimensions of climate change, the risks and challenges we face as a result, and our options for adapting to them.

Relevant chapters for mountain cryosphere in a changing climate (glaciers, permafrost, snow) include Chapter 2 (High Mountain Areas) and also Chapter 3 (Polar Regions) and Chapter 6 (Extremes, Abrupt Changes, and Managing Risks), in which mountain regions are also expected to be addressed/reflected.

The entire report includes both the physical science and the human dimensions. Therefore, experts from both the social sciences and humanities are also requested to engage in this review process and provide their comments in order to ensure the report captures key input from those disciplines.

The quality of the final report, to be published in September 2019, depends to a high degree on critical reviews from the entire community. The author team will have to respond and address every single review comment that is submitted through the IPCC system.

To submit expert review comments on the draft or parts thereof, please register online by 4 January 2019 at the very latest. The deadline for providing comments is 11 January 2019.

Any publications to be considered in the final report must have been submitted to a peer-reviewed journal by 15 October 2018 and must be accepted by 15 May 2019.

As an active contributor to the IPCC SROCC report, the MRI encourages the mountain research community to participate and be a part of the effort to enhance the visibility of mountains in a changing climate.
