The University of Lausanne (UNIL) is a higher teaching and research institution composed of seven faculties where approximately 14,300 students and nearly 3,800 collaborators, professors, and researchers work and study. Ideally situated along the Lake of Geneva, near Lausanne’s city center, its campus brings together over 120 nationalities. A small satellite campus in the town of Sion (VS), located along the Rhone River in the heart of the Alps, hosts the administrative team of the new Interdisciplinary Centre for Mountain Research, the research group Cultures and Natures of Tourism, and the MA in Tourism Studies.

ASSISTANT PROFESSOR SOUGHT
The Faculty of Geosciences and the Environment (FGSE) of UNIL invites applications for a professorship in the Geography of the Resources of Mountain Regions, to be based at the Institute of Geography and Sustainability (IGD). A candidate is sought who will develop a research and teaching program on issues related to the sustainable management of natural, social, and economic resources in mountain regions. Trained in the social and/or natural sciences, the ideal candidate will have demonstrated experience in undertaking and developing interdisciplinary research at the interface of the social and natural sciences.

FURTHER INFORMATION
Appointment will be at the Assistant Professor level (tenure track). However, exceptionally, UNIL will consider outstanding candidates for direct appointment to the Associate Professor level, notably if this corresponds with the FGSE’s equal opportunity plan of action.

Starting date: August 1st, 2019 (or to be agreed upon)
Contract length: 6 years. Tenure and promotion to the rank of Associate Professor expected after 5-6 years.
Activity rate: 100 %
Workplace: Shared between University of Lausanne, Sion campus (Bramois, VS) and Lausanne campus (Géopolis building)

YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES
The successful candidate will actively participate in the development of a new Centre for Interdisciplinary Research on Mountains (CIRM), based in Sion (VS), which will be initiating research in the Alps and other European mountains. The candidate will also be expected to integrate with the present team in Sion. The successful candidate will teach in the Bachelor of Geosciences and Environment and in relevant Masters taught by the FGSE, and will supervise bachelor, masters, and doctoral research students.

YOUR QUALIFICATIONS
Candidates must demonstrate a capacity to undertake high quality research, to obtain competitive research funding, and to publish in peer-reviewed international research journals. A demonstrated potential for teaching and for supervising student research at different levels is highly desirable. A good command of both French and English language is preferable. If French is not the native language, teaching ability in French has to be acquired within two years of the appointment.

The Faculty of Geosciences and Environment (FGSE) of the University of Lausanne is a young and dynamic faculty, launched in 2003 and offering state-of-the-art equipment, incentives for projects, and excellent working conditions. It consists of three research institutes (Earth Science, Geography and Sustainability, and Earth Surface Dynamics) and a School that manages teaching and training across these research domains. The FGSE specifically promotes interdisciplinary research and teaching, within and between the social and natural sciences.

The Institute of Geography and Sustainability (IGD) includes geographers (human and physical), economists, and environmental philosophers. The approximately ninety employees of the Institute participate in one or more research groups: Development, societies, and environment; Urban studies; Environmental humanities; Cultures and natures of tourism; Water and geoheritage; and Geographic information science.
