The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change has opened registration for the Government and Expert Review of its Sixth Assessment Synthesis Report. Members of the MRI community are encouraged to share their expertise. Registration closes 13 March 2022.
The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) is currently in its sixth assessment cycle, which aims to provide policymakers with scientific assessments concerning climate change, its implications and risks, and potential adaptation and mitigation strategies.
The Synthesis Report is the final product of the Sixth Assessment Report (AR6), and will be approved in September 2022. It synthesizes and integrates the findings of all three Working Group (WG) contributions to the Sixth Assessment Report, plus the three special reports that have been produced during this cycle.
“The Synthesis Report will bring together all the findings and work of the IPCC during the entire Sixth Assessment Cycle. This is why the review and scrutiny by both governments and experts is such a crucial and critical part of the process. The review will further firm up policy relevance, the scientific integrity and robustness of this closing chapter of the Sixth Assessment Cycle,” said Hoesung Lee, the Chair of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.
Given the Synthesis Report’s reference to key IPCC reports published in this assessment cycle with assessment content on mountains, members of the MRI community are strongly encouraged to register to participate in the expert review process.
The Government and Expert Review of the Synthesis Report of the Sixth Assessment Report runs from 10 January to 20 March 2022, 23:59 (GMT+1). Interested experts can register to participate in the review through the IPCC website.
Registration of experts closes on 13 March 2022, 23:59 (GMT+1), one week before the end of the review.
Release of Working Group II Contribution to IPCC AR6
Following the closure of the 55th IPCC Session, and subject to the Panel’s approval of the Summary for Policymakers, the release of the Working Group II contribution to the Sixth Assessment Report – entitled Climate Change 2022: Impacts, Adaptation, and Vulnerability – will take place at the end of February 2022.
Included within the WG II contribution to AR6 on impacts, adaptation, and vulnerability is a dedicated Cross-Chapter Paper on Mountains, with MRI Executive Director Carolina Adler serving as co-lead alongside ICIMOD’s Philippus Wester. MRI Principal Investigator Christian Huggel is among other members of the MRI leadership that comprise the lead author team of this key publication for our changing mountains, which synthesizes mountain-specific evidence and assessments from across all topics and regions covered in AR6. The assessment effort also counted on the immense support of many Contributing Authors from across the MRI network.

A virtual press conference to present the WG II Summary for Policymakers is scheduled for Monday, 28 February 2022 at 10:00 a.m. CET.
The press conference will be streamed live. Further details about scheduled speakers and how to access the livestream will be shared via the IPCC website closer to the time. Registered media will also receive details on how to submit questions closer to the time (more details on registration can be found under ‘How to Register’ in the event’s media advisory on the IPCC website. The deadline for registration is Friday, 18 February 2022).
The IPCC Chair, Working Group II Co-Chairs, and report authors will be available for interviews after the press conference.
