The Sustainability Research & Innovation Congress 2021 (SRI2021) is the world’s first transdisciplinary gathering on sustainability, a space to showcase sustainability scholarship, innovation, collaboration, and action. The MRI invites session contributions from early career researchers who seek to showcase key research findings on addressing systemic risks in mountain regions.

The deadline for flash talk proposals is 17 May 2021.

As part of the vast programme on offer at the SRI2021, the MRI will host an exciting session, titled 'Addressing systemic risks in social-ecological systems: mountains as contexts for evidence and action', which highlights examples of how key components of risk are accounted for in mountain contexts (hazard, exposure, vulnerability) and their implications for sustainability. By taking existing definitions of systemic risks, this session seeks to showcase cases and research results that provide insights on how systemic risk is conceptualized and explored in mountainous contexts, as well as offer a critical view to methodological advances that bring clarity on their usefulness in distilling evidence on 'what works' to address impacts and risks and that can be translated to tangible action on the ground.

This session specifically aims at responding to critical knowledge gaps on systemic risks and disaster risk reduction identified in the IPCC’s Special Report on the Ocean and Cryosphere in a Changing Climate (SROCC), and simultaneously responding to knowledge needs identified for the upcoming IPCC Working Group II contribution to the Sixth Assessment (AR6) on impacts, vulnerability and adaptation, as well as the UNDRR Global Assessment Report 2022.

The MRI invites abstracts from early career researchers (PhD students or up to 5 years post-doctorate) who conduct research on systemic risks in mountain regions to be part of this conversation and knowledge exchange opportunity, with four flash talk slots available for this session. If selected, you not only have the opportunity to showcase your research at this session, but also receive a registration ticket to attend SRI2021, compliments of the MRI. The MRI particularly encourages submissions from early career researchers in low- and middle-income countries.

Do you have a flash talk proposal based on your research? Submit your abstract via this online form by midnight CEST on Monday 17 May 2021 for a chance to be part of this important dialogue and knowledge exchange opportunity.
