The International Alpine Film Festival of Les Diablerets (FIFAD) has been the world's oldest mountain film festival for over 50 years, second only to Trento, Italy. This half-century of mountain films has made FIFAD one of the most important alpine film festivals in Switzerland and internationally. It attracts more than 20,000 visitors every year for 8 days. Film makers from all over the world, mountaineers and adventurers of the highest calibre meet in Les Diablerets to offer the public the quintessence of mountain films and books.
The FIFAD was launched in 1969 by Jacques Lavenex amateur filmmaker, mountaineer, skier and friend of the Diablerets resort. The objectives at the time, which are still the same, were: to divulge the wealth of this little-known, not to say ignored, film genre by presenting it to a wider public and, above all, to discover new, unpublished works by the mountaineer-filmmakers of the time, which would be landmarks in the history, culture and things of the mountains.
