MRI, alongside the Association of Polar Early Career Scientists (APECS), the Past Global Changes Early Career Network (PAGES ECN), the Permafrost Young Research Network (PYRN) and the Young Earth System Scientists (YESS) community, are calling for early career researchers to participate in a group review of the Second Order Draft (SOD) of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Sixth Assessment Report (AR6).

Important Update 1 May 2020: The IPCC Working Group II Sixth Asseessment Report schedule has been extended by four months. Read the official update from the IPCC hereThis article has been updated to reflect the new timeline.

We are temporarily pausing applications since  we need some time to adapt our group review schedule to these new dates.

In a few weeks, we will contact individuals who have already sent their applications to inform them about the new schedule. For those who have not applied yet, we would like to let you know that the updated call will be published in APECS, MRI, PAGES ECN, PYRN and YESS newsletters and social media, so stay tuned!

Participants will be asked to review a minimum of 10 to 20 pages of the report (with the possibility to review the entire report provided by the IPCC). Reviews are not anonymous – the name, affiliation, and country of residence of each reviewer will be included in the Annex of Reviewers of the WGII report as recognition for their valuable contribution, apart from the valuable training and experience with the scientific review process for reports addressed to policy makers. See this Annex of Expert Reviewers of the IPCC Special Report on 1.5°C Global Warming as an example.

The Second Order Draft (SOD) of the IPCC AR6 WGII report will be open for expert review from 4 December 2020 to 29 January 2021 (previously 7 August 2020 to 9 October 2020). The Working Group II (WGII) contribution to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Sixth Assessment Report (AR6) is due to be finalized in 2022 (previously in 2021).

Information about past group reviews

In 2018 APECS successfully coordinated two group reviews of the IPCC Special Report on the Ocean and Cryosphere in a Changing Climate (SROCC). Last year, in partnership with PAGES ECN, PYRN, YESS and MRI, APECS organized group reviews of the first order drafts of the WGI and WGII contribution to the IPCC AR6. Finally, the group review of the second order draft of the WGI contribution to the IPCC AR6 is currently in progress.

Given the success of these group reviews, we have decided to continue this work and organize the group review of the SOD of the WGII contribution to the IPCC AR6.

Who can participate in this group review?

We encourage early career researchers at various career stages to participate in this review, including advanced Master’s degree students, PhD students, postdoctoral researchers, and early career scholars. Reviewers need to be familiar with the recent literature in their field.

Please ensure that you will be available to participate in the review in December 2020 and January 2021 (see new review dates above), which is when this group review will take place. Previous reviewers spent on average 40 hours on the process, including training and reviewing.

How to apply

We are temporarily pausing applications since  we need some time to adapt our group review schedule . In a few weeks, we will contact individuals who have already sent their applications to inform them about the new schedule. If you want to participate in this group review, please wait for the updated application form.  Applications will be possible again as oon as the review schedule and form are updated.

The selection criteria will be based on research experience and motivation. Moreover, we will try to balance the selection of applicants based on gender, career stage and country of citizenship.

Selected participants will be contacted in June 2020. Further information about the review process will be shared with selected participants.

If you have any questions about this opportunity, please contact the project group leader: This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.. You can find more information about the general review process of the IPCC WGII report here.

We are modifying the application form to meet the updated schedule announced by the IPCC - New applications will be accepted soon again.
