The WSL Institute for Snow and Avalanche Research SLF is part of the Swiss Federal Institute for Forest, Snow and Landscape Research WSL and thus of the ETH Domain. WSL focuses on the sustainable use and protection of landscapes and habitats, and a responsible approach to natural hazards. WSL employs approximately 500 people, of whom 140 work at SLF in Davos.

The Research Group Snow Hydrology investigates the dynamics of snow water resources and snowmelt in alpine watersheds. To complement our team we offer a two-year position starting in July 2019.

The School of Geography and Sustainable Development, University of St Andrews, Scotland.

The School of Geography and Sustainable Development at St Andrews is seeking a Postdoctoral Researcher for 1 year, in the area of numerical modelling of glacier calving.  The position is available from 1 July 2019, or as soon as possible thereafter.  

Faculty of Science, Engineering and Built Environment at Deakin University in Melbourne, Australia. 

The Research Fellow will initiate and conduct research in ecosystem risk assessment, management and conservation. S/he will undertake risk assessments of Australian ecosystems, building on the IUCN Red List of Ecosystems protocol, and undertake scenario analyses to inform the sustainable management of ecosystem services and climate adaptation strategies, with a focus on alpine and sub-alpine ecosystems.

International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD). 

The International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) seeks to enable sustainable and resilient mountain development for improved and equitable livelihoods through knowledge and regional cooperation.  The Climate Change Adaptation and Governance Analyst will be responsible for integrating climate change adaptation and governance perspectives, concepts, frameworks, methodologies, and action plans into research and development components in different Regional Programmes and Initiatives. 

Faculty of Geo and Atmospheric Sciences at the University of Innsbruck, Austria.

The position will be based on a permanent civil-law employment contract with the University (§98 UG 2002).

The successful candidate will hold the position of Society-Environmental Relations in the Alps and other mountain regions, in research and teaching, within the Faculty of Geo and Atmospheric Sciences.

In addition, through a cooperation with the Austrian Academy of Science (ÖAW), it is intended, that the successful candidate will become active in the Institute of Interdisciplinary Mountain Research (IGF) of the ÖAW in Innsbruck, and in due course will likely fulfil the role of Director of the Institute (at the request of the Presidium of the Academy).

Recognizing the need to support and build capacities for regional and global assessment for science-policy processes, the Mountain Research Initiative, University of Zurich, Helvetas, and ICIMOD – in an initiative supported by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) – have teamed up to launch a call for applications for a mentoring and training program for early career mountain researchers who have an interest in participating in IPCC processes. Application deadline is 12 May 2019.

University of Fribourg, Switzerland.

Starting date: June 1st or as soon as possible

We have an open position (4+1 year) for one PhD student at the University of Fribourg, Switzerland, Department of Geosciences within the topic of: precipitation/snow accumulation in high-mountain cryospheric environments by means of climatological and meteorological data products, numerical models and field observations; and possibly with link to climate change impacts, risks and adaptation.

The fellowship period is up to 4 years, with 3 years devoted to research education. The position entails a compulsory work load of 25% that may consist of teaching, supervision duties, and research assistance.
