During the XXV National Congress of Geography's opening on 24 October 2023, Irasema Alcántara Ayala, a member of the MRI Scientific Leadership Council (SLC), was honoured with the "Benito Juárez" Medal by the Academy of Geography of the Mexican Society of Geography and Statistics (MSGS). This recognition celebrates her outstanding contributions to geographical science.

The General Assembly 2024 of the European Geosciences Union (EGU) will be held in Vienna, Austria and online, from 14–19 April 2024. This event includes several exciting, mountain-related sessions, including several convened by representatives of the MRI. Abstract submission closes 13:00 CET on 10 January 2024.

The International Cryosphere Climate Initiative (ICCI) today published its annual State of the Cryosphere Report which warns that even 2°C – the “upper” Paris Agreement temperature limit – will lead to catastrophic global damage from loss of ice sheets, mountain glaciers and snow, sea ice, permafrost, and in polar oceans. The MRI was pleased to contribute to Chapter 3: Mountain Glaciers and Snow.
