11-13 December, Rome, Italy

Members of the Mountain Partnership are invited to attend the Mountain Partnership Global Meeting, which will be held at the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) headquarters on 11-13 December 2017, in conjunction with the International Mountain Day. The Meeting will be followed by a two-day training course on the Mountain Green Cover Index on 14-15 December 2017. For organizational purposes, member governments and organizations are reminded that the deadline to register to attend the Global Meeting is 15 September 2017.

The Meeting is being organized jointly by the Mountain Partnership Secretariat, FAO and the Government of Italy. It aims to place the sustainability and resilience of mountain ecosystems and communities at the centre of international processes, policies and investments of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Almost one billion people live in mountain areas, and over half the human population depends on mountains for water, food and clean energy. Yet mountains are under a disproportionately high threat from climate change, land degradation and natural disasters, with potentially far-reaching and devastating consequences both for mountain communities and the rest of the world.

Under the main theme “Mountains under pressure: climate, hunger, migration”, the Meeting will focus on the challenges and the opportunities in sustainable mountain development and will launch a political process to support concrete actions and establish policies that strengthen the resilience of mountain peoples and environments. It will also provide an opportunity to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the Mountain Partnership and of the International Mountain Day.

The Meeting will be conducted in English, French, Russian and Spanish and will open at 09.00 hours on Monday 11 December with the political segment and will be followed by two days of technical discussion. A training course on Collect Earth methodology related to the Mountain Green Cover Index will take place during the period 14-15 December and will be open to selected participants.

To register to attend the Global Meeting and the training course on the Mountain Green Cover Index, please submit the online registration form by 15 September 2017.
