The Global Land Programme (GLP) is holding its 4th Open Science Meeting under the topic 'Transforming Land Systems for People and Nature.' With a wide diversity of research, immersive sessions, and training sessions, the conference will address three themes: what are the visions for the planetary land system; what do people want from land; and how do we support transformation?

MRI Sessions

Research Session (328R): Applying Scenario Tools for Sustainable Mountain Development

Thursday 25 April | 15:15 – 16:45

The MRI has joined forces with the Global Mountain Biodiversity Assessment (GMBA) and the GLP Mountains Working Group to organise a session on 'Applying Scenario Tools for Sustainable Mountain Development' (328R).

In light of the 2030 agenda, having information on how plausible futures of mountain social-ecological systems may look under different development scenarios is key to enable dialogue and negotiations with multiple actors with claims on mountain resources. Tools such as social-ecological systems modelling and participatory scenario approaches are developed to explore these scenarios and likely outcomes for communities, livelihoods, and mountain resources, with the ultimate aim being to better project the impact of local to global changes in mountains and assist in designing management decisions towards sustainable mountain development. These tools are developed in various disciplines, ranging from climate change and land systems to ecosystem services and biodiversity sciences, which in turn offers unique opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration towards sustainable mountain development.

MRI Training Session (384T): Exploring Scenario Tools for Sustainable Mountain Development – Modelling Session

Saturday 27 April | 09:00 – 12:00

This MRI-led training session will continue with the topic of scenario tools with hands-on training. Such frameworks can be effective tools for management decisions towards sustainable mountain development, but they are also considered challenging to apply and adjust to meet the needs of different study systems and the visions of local stakeholders.

In this hands-on interactive training session, Jessica Thorn (University of York), Claudia Capitani (University of York), and Enrico Celio (ETHZ) will present some of the recently developed scenario tool sets; e.g., Participatory Scenario Tools and Participatory Bayesian Network-Based Land-Use Modeling Approach (BLUMAP). The session format will be a mixture of short lectures, interactive exercises, and discussions. This training session is free to attend for conference participants.

Because of limited seating registration via Conference App Whova is recommended.

UPDATE: THIS TRAINING SESSION IS NOW OPEN ALSO FOR THOSE NOT PARTICIPATING IN THE CONFERENCE.
