Systematic observation of the social-ecological dimensions of mountain areas can help us understand the social, environmental, economic, and cultural dynamics and trends affecting mountain communities and ecosystems. This information is crucial in designing and implementing policies and actions that promote sustainable and inclusive development. MRD author Julieta Carilla will present her group’s findings on research priorities for long-term social-ecological monitoring in the Andes. Birendra Bajracharya will share experiences from the Forest Fire Detection and Monitoring System for Nepal. Valentin Wallnöfer will offer insights into the Sustainable Tourism Observatory of South Tyrol, Italy, and James Thornton will present the GEO Mountains initiative, which aims to enhance the accessibility and usability of monitoring data and information across the world’s mountains.

MRD Talks are organised jointly by Mountain Research and Development (MRD) and the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) as part of the PRIMA project funded by Austrian Development Cooperation (ADC).
