'An agenda for sustainable mountaineering: research needs, projects and partnership opportunities.'
The Sustainable Summits Conference 2018 (SSC 2018) invites communities in scientific research, practitioners, public and private sectors, mountaineers and the general public, to reflect on and debate some of the key questions that hang over the sustainability of mountaineering and mountain tourism and recreation, particularly in a complex context of global change in mountain environments. Topics regarding the role of high mountains in society, climate change, and human impacts, among others, should compel us to also plan for and address concrete actions.
Following the SSC 2018, the Mountain Research Initiative (MRI), with the participating support from the UIAA, IFMGA, GRIDA, UNEP, and the Petzl Foundation, cordially invites your participation at the MRI Scoping Workshop & Networking Event 'An agenda for sustainable mountaineering: research needs, projects and partnership opportunities,' to be held at the Majestic Congress Centre, Chamonix-Mont-Blanc, on Friday 15 June 2018, to continue this conversation!
This scoping workshop and networking event is convened to:
1. Provide an opportunity for continued dialogue and exploration of issues and ideas presented at the SCC 2018;
2. Facilitate a platform to address other open questions and avenues for joint knowledge production and action on mountaineering's contribution to sustainable mountain development;
3. Foster existing and establish new connections through networking with individuals from diverse communities, spanning scientific research, practitioners in the public and private sectors, as well as professional and amateur mountaineers;
4. Spawn ideas and avenues for future research and project collaborations, networks and working groups on global change research in the context of mountaineering tourism and recreation.REGISTRATION
The workshop is free to attend, including daytime catering, however we do encourage participants to mobilise their own resources for travel, accommodation, and related expenses.
Given the workshop’s participatory format, there are only a limited number of spots available. Registration to attend is therefore required. Please complete the registration form
to confirm your attendance by Sunday 27 May 2018
. After all available spots are taken, you will be placed on a waiting list - early registration is advisable!
In case of cancellations, please inform us as soon as possible and preferably no later than 1 June 2018, so that we may allocate your spot to someone on the waiting list.
